Endodontics is a specialty of dentistry dedicated to the prevention, diagnosis and treatment of diseases or injuries of dental pulp. The pulp, which many people call “nerve”, is a soft tissue within the tooth that contains nerves and blood vessels. It is the cause of dental development. Root canal treatment provides a safe and effective method to save teeth. If this treatment does not exist, those teeth would be lost. It is also known as “killing the nerve” of the tooth.
When the pulp of a tooth has been injured or is sick, being unable to repair itself, it becomes inflamed and eventually “dies.”
Causes to have to “kill a nerve”:
- Extensive cavities
- Deep seals (fillings)
- Injuries (e.g., a strong blow to a tooth)
- Tooth fracture
- Periodontal or gum disease.
- Bacteria from cavitiesor saliva itself, which can travel along the root canal reaching the end of the root and can form an injury (periapical lesion) that can be accompanied by pain and swelling.
